The intellectual and wisdom disparity between Einhard and Notker, both the good guy and the mastermind, contributes to the historical image of Charlemagne that persists to this day. The young intellectual and mentor Einhard and the monastic scholar Notker each offered two similar but different biographies of Charlemagne in their two Charlemagne lives. The biographies collected here provide a rich and diverse portrait of the king from two angles. Charlemagne exhibited great signs of becoming a ruler and, eventually, an emperor. Charlemagne’s popularity stems from the fact that he founded the Carolingian Empire, which revived education, implemented religious reforms, and established civil policy (Sherman 210-211). One of the most well-known kings of the Franconia Empire was Charlemagne. ![]()
